Who is the elder? Some hypotheses for the intervention

Abstract
Abstract In order not to confuse the elderly state with the psychobiological development of the individual – growth, maturity, decadence – this paper aims to recover the difference between the prescribed emotions, seen as proper to the social role of the elderly, and the experience both of the people who have this role, and of those who have to do with them in various capacities (family members, carers). Psychoanalysis has kept away from old age: it would seem that advanced age contracts the space of the symbolic, that the importance of experiences is reduced, and one feels confronted with facts that "finally" acquire the weight of indisputable limits, compared to the which one feels helpless. However, the elderly continue to have an emotional life, whatever their biological and/or cognitive condition and the unconscious does not know time. Rather, it seems important to find ways to interrupt the enactment and think about the collusive set-up of desocialization, loss of identity and social power associated with the elderly state.
