Analysis of demand and individual-context integration in the clinical interview

Abstract

In this contribution, taken from a volume entitled Handbook of the Clinical Interview and the Interview, published in 1995, Renzo Carli offers an examination of the term clinical interview as it is used in psychology. His reflections are still relevant today. Given the ambiguity of the term, and taking as a starting point the unconscious mode of being of the mind and its social dimension, Carli proposes conceiving it as an interaction aimed simultaneously at knowledge and intervention, within the relationship thus established. From this perspective, the context in which the interaction takes place serves an exclusively pretextual function; that is, it constitutes a phenomenology to be reflected upon rather than acted upon uncritically. The contribution also traces, in a very rich and articulated manner, how the clinical interview has been understood in psychology, proposing different models and functions.
