Abstract

This work proposes the construct of the “spazio anzi”, which refers to the tolerance of confusion between the categories used by thought, within the biological hypothesis of the mind. The “spazio anzi” is presented as a re-elaboration of the relationship between these two levels in the psychic life of a collective, rather than of individual subjects. Furthermore, it is suggested that this construct involves both a “mental” and an “empirical” process: it concerns not only thought but also action and its consequences. Therefore, the “spazio anzi” has eminently social connotations, and if we consider its relationship with action, we can understand the risk posed by the confusion of the usual categories of knowledge and the need to develop new ones. A corresponding defense against this risk is a false coherence, which acts as both a denial and a mediation between the old and the new. In this contribution, the psychosocial group is proposed as the most suitable context in which to experiment with the “anzi” experience; thus, to confront categorical confusion and to restructure, on new grounds, the individual dynamics of social adaptation as they take shape within the group context.
