Abstract

Depressive symptoms during pregnancy may have devastating consequences, not only for the women, but
also for the child and family. Antenatal depression may influence the baby’s health and it also places the
woman at significant risk of developing postpartum depression. Antenatal depression has been relatively
neglected; for this reason it’s necessary to identify the depressive symptoms across the pregnancy period.
The psychodynamic interpretation of antenatal depression helps to frame the disease allowing to develop
more complete and personalized treatments.
