Building Spaces for Voice in Prison A Creative Writing Group with a Psychoanalytic Method in a Health Isolation Unit

Abstract
The article presents an intervention of a creative writing group carried out using a psychoanalytic method in a health isolation unit of an Italian penitentiary institution. The role is that of Expert Psychologist ex art. 80, a consultant to the prison’s treatment area. It will discuss the relationship with a commissioning party interested in exploring an interpretative function of the problems that emerge in a context in which the treatment mandate appears to be suspended, replaced by a health and control mandate.
The apparent suspension of the mandate will create conditions for exploring alternatives to the individualist perspective of the treatment culture. Creative writing will take on several functions: to legitimize the group in the complexity of prison cultures; to pose as a “third thing” that supports the construction of a non-violence-based group membership; and to allow the expression of speech about the present of incarceration, facilitated by the polysemy of artistic language, in a context that represses it.
A twofold demand of the inmates will be intercepted: on the one hand, a desire to build alternative ways of coexistence to the violence of prison culture emerges; on the other hand, there is interest in establishing a dialogue with the institution to participate in the symbolic construction of the detention context. It will be proposed that through the methodology of reporting, it is possible to share with the commissioning party interpretive keys capable of making sense of the critical behaviors of inmates, which may express problems in the relationship between inmate, community and institution, thus overcoming tautological readings based on deviance or mental pathology that ignore the individual-context relationship.
